A cheap external SSD will not give your PS5 the extra play space you expect
Storage capacity and playable capacity are different purchases. The PS5/PS4 distinction tells you whether M.2 or USB solves your actual space problem.
You delete a game to install another, then miss the one you deleted. Soon the hobby feels less like gaming and more like managing a storage unit. A roomy external SSD looks tempting. Before comparing terabytes, ask what you will be able to launch from it.
The distinction hidden behind the capacity number
Sony distinguishes storage from execution: PS5 games can be kept on USB extended storage but must be copied to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD to play. PS4 games can run from USB extended storage. The same external drive therefore has a different practical value for different libraries.
Read “can store” and “can play” as separate columns. More bytes do not automatically mean more ready-to-launch PS5 games. A faster USB product does not remove the platform’s execution restriction.
For frequent PS5 switching, prioritize playable space. USB serves PS5 archiving and PS4 play.

How to read this This compares game-file storage, not saved-game backups. Formatting a drive can erase existing data.
The active shelf and the archive
If you regularly switch among several PS5 games, you need playable space; a compatible M.2 expansion directly addresses that. If only one or two games are active and the rest are an archive, USB can still have a job. Avoiding another download can matter on a slow or constrained connection.
Separate recently played titles from the someday pile. If the latter dominates, not every game needs expensive ready-to-play space. An active shelf and an archive are more useful planning units than one large undifferentiated capacity target.
M.2 is not the whole compatibility checklist
The M.2 label is not a universal PS5 compatibility mark. Match Sony’s interface, specification, capacity, dimensional, and heat-dissipation requirements. Check the complete assembly including its heatsink, not just the bare drive. A compatible component can still become an unsuitable physical combination.
Read the drive’s documentation beside Sony’s installation instructions. Do not format a drive containing needed files without dealing with those files first. When prices are close, documented compatibility of the complete assembly is more useful than an unexplained “heatsink included” badge.

Does 5,500MB/s alone make it PS5-compatible?
Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s alongside interface, dimensions, and cooling requirements. M.2 SATA is unsupported, and matching a speed number does not guarantee identical game performance.
Scope of the evidence A recommended speed is not a compatibility certification. Check the exact model and dimensions with its heatsink.
Where the budget should go
Compare M.2 first for several immediately playable PS5 titles; compare USB first for a PS4-heavy library or a PS5 archive. You may eventually want both, but the first purchase should answer the inconvenience you actually had: another download or another move before playing.
