Castlevania 40th Anniversary free on mobile until Oct 24: what to know
The first Castlevania is free on mobile until October 24. Claim it before then to redownload it later; console and PC sale dates are included.
You can download the first Castlevania to your phone for free today. It is the same game that came out on Japan's Famicom on September 26, 1986. Search Google Play for Castlevania: 40th Anniversary and you will find it listed under the developer KONAMI.
For the series' 40th anniversary, Konami is giving this port away on iOS and Android until October 24. Claim it to your account before then and you can download it again after the deadline. The store listing says it plays offline, so once it is on your phone you do not need a connection.
The GameBus button in this guide links to a gamer social network run by the same company that operates IssueBite. Game details are based on the Google Play listing and launch press reports.

How long it is free, and what happens if you miss it
The deadline is October 24 according to press reports. Claim it to your account before then and you can download it again later; once the date passes it can no longer be newly downloaded from the stores. Inven Global reported 11:59 p.m. on October 24 but gave no time zone, so do not leave it to the last night.
Konami's reason for the giveaway is the anniversary. September 26 was exactly 40 years since the original Japanese release, and Konami's official Castlevania portal promotes the free download directly. Console and PC sales, a soundtrack release and news of a new game all landed in the same week. Below is the 40th anniversary video posted on Konami's official channel.
How to play this classic on a phone
It is the 1986 original, in which Simon enters Dracula's castle with a single whip. The only control the store describes is an on-screen touchpad, so whether the whip timing suits your hands is something you can only learn by trying it during the free window.
The features the store highlights are whip action, a dark and sprawling castle, and offline play. It opens without internet, so you can use it on a subway or a plane.
Want a bigger screen? Decide within two days
If you would rather play on a bigger screen, there are sales running. PlayStation's runs from September 23 to October 7 and Steam's from September 24 to October 8.
The Castlevania Anniversary Collection is up to 80% off, the Advance Collection 70% and the Dominus Collection 50%. Requiem is 70% off on PlayStation only. The table below puts this month's dates in one place.
The console sales close first and the free mobile download closes last.
| Date | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 24 | Free mobile download ends | Google Play, App Store |
| Oct 7 | PlayStation sale ends (started Sept 23) | PlayStation |
| Oct 8 | Steam sale ends (started Sept 24) | Steam |
| Oct 15 | Castlevania: Belmont's Curse releases | PS5, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch |
| Spring 2027 | 40th anniversary orchestral concerts | Tokyo, Los Angeles, London |
How to read this Console, PC and concert dates follow Inven Global (September 29); the mobile deadline follows Inven Global (September 24).
After this free game, can you play October 15's Belmont's Curse on a phone?
The short answer: the reported platforms are PS5, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch, and a phone is not among them. The new game, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, launches October 15. Its hero is Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont, and her weapon is the Vampire Killer whip. It swaps traditional pixel art for 3D graphics with bold outlines and includes arranged versions of classics such as Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears.
The phone app is the 1986 original, a separate product from the new game. The soundtrack, Castlevania Black & Red, has been streaming since September 26.
