Dragonwilds with friends on PC and console: check Game Pass before buying again

Crossplay, access to the game and moving a save are different questions. Here is what the official announcements establish—and what your group should check before buying another copy.

You own Dragonwilds on Steam; your friend plays on Xbox. Do you need matching storefronts? Crossplay is announced for the PC and console launch. Different hardware alone is not a reason to buy again. Each player still needs access to the game, and playing together does not establish that your save can move to another platform.

Check your group’s devices and existing subscriptions before opening a checkout. This is a source-based guide checked on September 15, not a hands-on test of cross-platform sessions or availability in every country.

Start with access, not matching hardware

Jagex’s June announcement pairs PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with crossplay. Its current FAQ also lists Switch 2 among the launch platforms. Those announcements do not independently verify every device pairing, live connection or dedicated-server configuration.

For Xbox players, ask which subscription they hold. The September 1 Xbox Wire listing names Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass. A PC subscription is not interchangeable with console access: check the game listing for your device, account and country before paying again.

Jagex also announces PS Plus Extra and Premium availability on PS5. Check the local catalog and tier names. Calling the game simply ‘free with PS Plus’ loses the tier and subscription conditions that affect a real purchase.

Joining a friend is not moving your character

Crossplay concerns who can join the same game. Save transfer concerns where you can continue your own progress. A Steam player hoping to move an established character to PS5 needs evidence about the second question, not just an announcement about the first.

The launch documents and FAQ reviewed here do not settle save movement between every storefront. That is not proof that every pairing is unsupported. Equally, an Xbox-and-Windows entitlement should not be assumed to cover a Steam purchase.

A group starting fresh can prioritize access and joining the same session. Someone bringing an existing character should write down the original storefront and destination device first. These are different preparations for what initially sounds like the same plan.

Existing owners and new buyers have different next steps

Keep an existing Steam purchase in view. Jagex’s FAQ describes its launcher as a separate platform from Steam, so changing launchers is not evidence that an existing entitlement follows you. Buying wherever a friend bought can create unnecessary duplication.

For new buyers, Jagex’s September 2 decision keeps the base price at £24.99 or $29.99 after 1.0. An older price-rise warning is no longer enough reason to rush. The announcement does not fix every country’s taxes, exchange rates or discounts.

Discuss whether this is one weekend together or a world you want to maintain for months. Existing access may answer the first question; ongoing subscription and save arrangements matter more to the second. Match the purchase to the plan, rather than letting a sale choose the plan.

Four checks before the first long session

List devices and storefronts, confirm each person’s entitlement, investigate save movement only where needed, and verify that your group can join before committing to a long session. Do not start by renting a server or purchasing a new subscription.

If joining fails, record the error, game version, platform and who is hosting. That is a useful basis for separating account, update and server issues. This guide does not invent menu labels or a troubleshooting procedure it has not tested.

The official trailer below serves a different purpose: notice whether gathering, building or exploration is what draws each friend in. Successful crossplay gets a group into a game. Compatible tastes give it a reason to return.
