Claude Code weekly limits: why an increase feels like a cut
The weekly promotion ended. Here is why Claude Code now offers 25% more than its old baseline but roughly 16.7% less than during the promotion, and what to check before paying more.
The announcement says you get more usage. Your coding budget feels smaller. Both can be true: September 14 changed the comparison point, much as the end of a sale changes what feels like a normal price.
Set the old weekly allowance to 100: the promotion gave 150 and the replacement gives 125. That is 25% above the old base, about 16.7% below the promotion. The promotion ended September 13 at 11:59pm Pacific—September 14 at 3:59pm in Korea. Five-hour limits were unchanged.
Two headlines, two different denominators
The drop from the promotional allowance is 25. To calculate that reduction, divide by the previous allowance of 150—not the older baseline of 100. The result is about 16.7%, so neither a 25% cut nor a halving describes this policy change.
These are index values, not message or token allocations. The same allowance need not buy the same amount of time for a small bug fix and a repository-wide task. The calculation explains the policy ratio. It cannot tell you how many hours of development remain today.
Find the limit that stopped you before buying more
The promotion document explicitly says five-hour limits were unaffected. If work stops while your weekly meter still has room, this announcement alone does not explain the interruption. Check /usage in Claude Code and Settings > Usage in your account for the exhausted window and its reset time.
A limit that resets this afternoon and a nearly exhausted weekly allowance create different scheduling problems. One may call for a break; the other may call for reserving remaining capacity for work that actually needs it. A message about conversation length is another issue again: context capacity and usage allowance are different constraints.
The promotion did not cover every Claude surface
The benefit covers Claude Code on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise, not Free, usage-based Enterprise, ordinary chat or Cowork.
That also does not mean chat and coding are completely separate wallets. Anthropic’s Pro and Max guide says Claude and Claude Code share usage limits. The scope of a promotional boost and the way account usage is counted answer different questions. Adding an imagined 25% chat boost to a 25% coding boost would be misleading.
Make the next task smaller before making the bill bigger
Before upgrading, tighten the next request. ‘Find the failing path and propose the minimum correction’ gives an agent a clearer finish line than ‘improve this whole project.’ This is workflow design, not a promise of a particular saving: it reduces room for unnecessary investigation and unrelated changes.
If a deadline still makes extra capacity worthwhile, compare a higher plan with usage credits. The current help page says credits are charged at standard API rates and offers spending caps and auto-reload controls. The important question is not just whether work continues, but which balance is paying for it. To avoid additional spending, decline paid continuation and wait for the allowance to reset.
