The Busan shark brought an Ediya cafe a crowd. Why did the owner apologize?

A shark-watching crowd became a coffee queue. The Ediya owner’s response reveals a small-business story about capacity, waiting customers and a windfall that has not been measured.

A shark appeared, and a coffee shop became busy. As visitors gathered at Busan’s North Port, an Ediya cafe owner became an unlikely supporting character in the story. The owner’s first widely reported response was an apology rather than a sales boast.

The Korea Economic Daily reported the owner’s account of staff and family struggling to keep up with drinks and apologizing to customers who waited or cancelled. That supports a story about sudden demand. It does not tell us the store’s revenue or profit.

The owner also rejected jokes suggesting the cafe had released or fed the shark, according to the newspaper’s account. The response combined a correction with humour, giving an already unusual event a recognizably human side.

On September 22, the ediya_bumin_ account identified in the coverage posted a waterfront video and a coffee-cup photograph, greeting and thanking the shark. Its appeal is the small everyday gesture. The original photos and video are linked below.

Visitors arrive faster than a cafe can expand

Read this as a small-business scene and the first thing to notice is a bottleneck. People can arrive together; an espresso machine, ice supply and pair of working hands cannot instantly double. When orders arrive faster than drinks can leave the counter, a queue forms.

The revealing part of the owner’s response is the apology to people who cancelled or gave up. Attention can bring someone to the door, but a person still has to prepare the final drink. That small apology conveys the pressure behind the counter better than a triumphant crowd photograph.

A visitor count cannot be converted directly into profit: supplies and extra labour also cost money. The available reports do not provide that calculation. The useful takeaway is how a small shop responds when demand changes faster than its capacity.

Leave time for coffee, and room for the story to change

If you visit, separate your waterfront plans from the time needed to order a drink. An old report of a long wait is not today’s wait-time estimate. Current availability and the store’s own guidance are more useful than a viral screenshot.

The charm is that an ordinary working day acquired an extraordinary neighbour. Jokes about keeping the shark nearby should not become feeding it. The animal has somewhere else to go, and the people behind the counter still have tomorrow’s work to do.
